University of Wisconsin-Madison Postdoctoral Conference on Professional Development
8:30 am - 3:00 pm Saturday April 6, 2013
Microbial Sciences Building
In conjunction with the University of Wisconsin Graduate School, the UWPA put on a symposium titled, “Taking Charge of Your Career”. We recruited Dr. Philip Clifford, Associate Dean of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at the Medical College of Wisconsin (currently Associate Dean for Research and Professor of Kinesiology and Nutrition at the University of Illinois at Chicago), as the keynote speaker. Dr. Clifford is an outspoken advocate for postdoctoral education at local and national levels and he is a coauthor of the career website, myIDP.sciencecareers.org. Dr. Clifford gave an extremely informative and motivating presentation titled, “You Need a Game Plan”.
The symposium also provided sessions for several career panels and career skills workshops, which were organized and moderated by members of the UWPA. The career panels included careers in academia, careers in industry and small biotech firms, and non-traditional science careers. The career skills workshops included effective networking, grant writing, CV and resume writing, and effective interviewing.
